Little steps, big impact. At Spring RAF Halton, we are on a mission to weave sustainability into everyday nursery life. Through initiatives such as growing food, exploring nature, reducing waste, Forest School and community projects, children gain confidence, learn responsibility and develop a genuine care for the planet.
At Spring RAF Halton, we’ve been working hard to embed sustainability into everyday nursery life so that children grow up with a natural sense of care for the world around them. We’ve created an environment where curiosity, responsibility and a connection to nature flourish through simple, hands‑on experiences.
One of the most joyful parts of this journey is growing food with the children. This year, planting has already begun using biodegradable pots, allowing plants to be transferred directly into the soil when ready. In our Navigators group (2–3 yrs), children begin with planting cress because it grows quickly and gives an immediate sense of success. This helps our younger children build confidence and become familiar with the growing process. Meanwhile, our Inventors (3 – 5yrs) have taken on longer-term projects, growing runner beans (including red varieties to show how vegetables come in many colours), carrots, tomatoes, spring onions, herbs and even giant pumpkins. These slower growing crops help children learn patience and understand that different foods grow at different speeds.
The children love checking on the plants each morning, counting how much they’ve grown and spotting changes, especially after weekends, when progress can feel dramatic. They’re often keen to show their parents the garden, and we’ve even heard families say, “Maybe we could grow something at home too!”. The impact goes beyond learning. We’ve seen that when children help grow food and pass it on to the kitchen team, they become far more open to tasting new foods, especially those they have helped grow. Being involved in the full process – planting, watering and harvesting – builds pride, curiosity and a willingness to explore new flavours.

We’re passionate about weaving sustainability into our daily routines. Recycling and composting are a normal part of nursery life at Spring RAF Halton, helping children understand how materials can be reused or returned to the earth.
We’ve also made several practical changes to reduce waste, including:
During a recent chat about recycling, the children suggested that instead of throwing broken teddies away, we could fix them. What made this especially powerful was that several children had already discussed this idea at home – a lovely reminder that sustainability conversations are continuing beyond the nursery and into family life.
We also recently welcomed the Aylesbury Wombles, who delivered a fun and engaging presentation about recycling and litter picking. To support this theme, we’ve invested in a new collection of sustainability themed books to spark curiosity and conversations from a young age.

Children are encouraged to explore the natural world through our Forest School sessions and weather station area, where conversations about seasons, wildlife and the planet happen naturally. We took part in the Great British Birdwatch 2026, giving children exciting opportunities to observe birds, talk about what they noticed and begin to understand biodiversity in a hands-on way.
We’re also currently working towards being awarded the Eco Schools Green Flag a Keep Britain Tidy led programme designed specifically for the littlest of learners to help children take part in caring for their environment. The Eco Schools framework (which is free to sign up to) allows us to introduce sustainable changes across the nursery, involve all children in age appropriate Eco learning, and embed environmental responsibility into everyday routines in a way that feels accessible, fun and meaningful.
Alongside environmental action, our involvement with the local food bank helps children understand compassion, community and the importance of helping others, reminding us that true sustainability is about people as well as the planet.

Our commitment to being environmentally conscious is resonating with families too. Recently, a parent chose Spring RAF Halton specifically because of our strong sustainability focus, sharing that seeing our Eco initiatives during their show around made them feel confident it was the right choice for their child. It’s reassuring to know that our values are being recognised and appreciated.
There’s lots of things we’re looking forward to:
Together, our team and everyday actions create a nursery where sustainability is woven into learning, play and relationships. Children aren’t just learning about environmental sustainability – they’re living it, sharing it with their families, and developing a stronger understanding of nature, recycling and where their food comes from.
We’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far and remain committed to continuing to embed sustainable living throughout our nursery.
